David Shiman was a professor of education at the University of Vermont for 43 years. There, he taught courses in comparative education and multicultural education, wrote books on prejudice reduction and human rights. and directed the Center for World Education, a global and multicultural curriculum resource center. He was president of United Academics, the faculty union at UVM for ten years and served as chief contract negotiator on four occasions. He also served on Amnesty International USA’s Board of Directors and has conducted human rights education workshops in many countries, including South Africa, Poland, Guyana, and Israel and the Palestinian territories. In 2019, Human Rights Educators USA honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award. He is particularly interested in exploring the role of education in the advancement of social justice goals.
