Job Opening: Program Assistant

Who we are: The Peace & Justice Center is a membership-based non-profit organization whose mission is to create a just and peaceful world.  Founded in 1979 to do anti-nuclear war work, we work on the interconnected issues of economic and racial justice, peace, and human rights through education, advocacy, training, non-violent activism and community organizing. The current campaigns focus on Racial Justice, Fair Trade, and Peace Education.  We also operate a fair trade and local store on Burlington’s waterfront.

Job Description: Assist the Program Managers on events, campaigns, and programs. This includes Racial Justice, Fair Trade, Peace, and miscellaneous programming.

Responsibilities include:

  • work with program partners, volunteers, interns, and other staff members to promote events and programs on social media, website, through news outlets, and more
  • post relevant articles in conjunction with upcoming events and programs.
  • administrative duties to support events (booking space, registering participants)
  • participant communications (contacting people before, during and after workshops to offer support and gather feedback)
  • schedule and staff informational tables at public events
  • help train and support interns and volunteers
  • participate in community events as PJC representative
  • general clerical duties including photocopying, faxing, mailing, and electronic and hard copy filing

Skills and Qualifications:

  • experience with Constant Contact, Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms
  • experience with event planning and promotion
  • computer proficient with Microsoft Office and WordPress web software
  • ability to work under stress, meet deadlines, collaborate and also work alone
  • strong written communication, interpersonal skills and presentation ability
  • ability to plan, organize and prioritize with attention to details
  • ability to work quickly and accurately
  • meaningful connections to marginalized populations such as immigrant communities, queer communities, communities of color, etc.
  • graphic design useful but not necessary

Job Opening: Seasonal Store Clerk

Who we are: The Peace & Justice Center is a membership-based non-profit organization whose mission is to create a just and peaceful world.  Founded in 1979 to do anti-nuclear war work, we work on the interconnected issues of economic and racial justice, peace, and human rights through education, advocacy, training, non-violent activism and community organizing. The current campaigns focus on Racial Justice, Fair Trade, and Peace Education.  We also operate a fair trade and local store on Burlington’s waterfront. The Peace & Justice Store offers customers a wide variety of fairly-traded goods from the global south, local and eco-friendly products, and educational materials that help customers explore a variety of social justice issues.

Job Description: The Store Clerk is responsible for helping customers with shopping needs and check out, stocking inventory, creating displays, receiving product, and other administrative duties for the store and center.  In addition, the clerk will act as an ambassador for the Peace & Justice Center by providing excellent customer service. They will engage interested customers in conversation about the organization including membership opportunities, upcoming events, and the importance of the Fair Trade movement. This position will work alongside volunteers who staff the store, some of whom are in job experience programs and will benefit from the clerk’s abilities.

Required Qualifications: Strong interpersonal skills, ability to learn a Point of Sales system (cash register), interest in Fair Trade and related issues of social justice.  Retail experience and social justice work preferred.

Approximate Hours per Week:  10-12 hours

Shifts Available: Saturday and Sunday, 2:30-7:30pm, plus one meeting during the week. This position starts in early May.
