Peace & Justice Author Series: THE GIANT ASIAN GIRLS with Misoo

Join Peace & Justice Center and artist Misoo for a discussion of her series of paintings entitled The Giant Asian Girls. The Giant Asian Girls are an acrylic painting and collage series that contemplates the unique intersection of gender-based violence and racial stereotypes for Asian women living in the United States. In one aspect, the work is a counterbalance to the western “fetishization” of Asian women, and in another, it is a fantasy narrative about the privilege of size.

Misoo was born in the Bronx in 1980, but moved back to her parent’s homeland of South Korea when she was a one-year old. A short 17 years later, she returned to the US with ambitions to use painting as her mode of emotional communication and story-telling.
Misoo has exhibited in number of galleries and museums including, Boca Raton Museum of Art, Southern Vermont Arts Center, Bailey Contemporary Arts, Florida Atlantic University, Durham Arts Council, Palm Beach State College, University of Texas, University of Vermont, Girl’s Club in Fort Lauderdale, Burlington City Arts, Champlain College, Vermont Arts Council, Flemings Museum and Steinhardt Museum of Natural History in Tel Aviv. Misoo was selected as one of the Emerging Artist of New England in 2019 and Vermont Artist to Watch in 2020.
