For years I’ve been interested in how parents and teachers work to protect children from knowing the truth about topics they are uncomfortable discussing. I’ve heard all the excuses; “They’re too young to know the truth,” “I only teach my perspective, that’s what I understand best,” and my favorite, “That’s what I learned as a child”. The lack of honest discussion about Thanksgiving and Columbus Day really stand out to me. Most people see these days as a day off from work and a great time to get good deals in the stores which are riddled with sales and specials to draw people in during these holidays. But what does this all have to do with the history of the holiday and our children? Everything!
