Israeli Occupation of Palestine Begins 54th Year – No End in Sight

The ice-cream brand will stop advertising on Facebook, Inc., and Instagram FOR A MONTH starting July 1. Why?

“Ben & Jerry’s stands with our friends at the NAACP and Color of Change, the ADL [Anti-Defamation League], and all those calling for Facebook to take stronger action to stop its platforms from being used to divide our nation, suppress voters, foment and fan the flames of racism and violence, and undermine our democracy,” the company said in a statement.

“We call on Facebook, Inc. to take the clear and unequivocal actions called for by the campaign to stop its platform from being used to spread and amplify racism and hate.”

BEN & JERRY’S standing with its friend, the ADL (Anti-Defamation League)?

Signing on to this coupling is not just “strange bedfellows”, or naiveté, but clarifies much that the company tries so hard to keep hidden.

Our friend, the Anti-Defamation League

ADL is one of the truly vicious, well-funded organizations, hiding behind the “moral authority” of its name and mission (“to stop the defamation of the Jewish people, and to secure justice and fair treatment to all”) to attack Arab-, Black-, left- and queer activism, and undermine their work.

They were the first organization to call on Congressional leaders to take action against Ilhan Omar for her supposed antisemitism, a well-worn charge they have aimed at Black and allied leaders and movements from the sixties to the current Black Lives Matter (BLM).

Now they are pushing for a federal “Anti-Semitism Awareness Act” defining criticism of Israel as necessarily antisemitic. The ADL, along with the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, is campaigning to label Arab-American political organizing as dual loyalty, advocating that the FBI and the DHS actively surveil Muslim communities.

The organization has always demonstrated strong allegiance to the US state, collaborating with HUAC in the 1940s and 1950s. More recently, it has celebrated Trump’s move of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem.  Its annual Audit of Anti-Semitic Incidents finds always-rising antisemitism within the US left and Muslim “extremism,” especially in calls for Palestinian rights. It has labeled Black-led, anti-racist projects “anti-Semitic,” and tries to sideline Black-led and Arab-led civil rights groups.  In 2016, ADL’s director criticized BLM policy, asking that the movement set aside intersection with Palestinian resistance, and keep its “eyes on the prize.”
