“All is not okay or right for those of us who
return home alive
and supposedly well. What looks like
normalcy and readjustment is only
an illusion to be revealed by time and torment.
Some soldiers come home
missing limbs and other parts of their bodies.
Still others will live
with permanent scars from horrific events
that no one other than those
who served will ever understand.”

Douglas Barber, IVAW 2005

:
IVAW’s WINTER SOLDIER: IRAQ & AFGHANISTAN
http://www.ivaw.org/wintersoldier
http://youtube.com/watch?v=h_tUT4FtuGo
This spring, Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) is revealing the reality of the U.S. occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. In what will be history's largest gathering of U.S. veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as Iraqi and Afghan survivors, eyewitnesses will share their experiences in a public investigation called Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan. Winter Soldiers, according to founding father Thomas Paine, are those who stand up for the soul of their country, even in its darkest hours. With this spirit in mind, IVAW members are standing up to make their experiences available to all who are concerned about the direction of our country. From March 13-16, 2008, Iraq Veterans Against the War will gather in our nation's capital to break the silence and hold our leaders accountable for these wars. We hope you'll join us, because ours is a story that every American needs to hear.

We will be hosting live feeds throughout the state of Vermont. Please check www.pjcvt.org for updates.

WARRIOR WRITERS: RE-MAKING SENSE
IVAW's Warrior Writers Project unleashes its second book!
We are excited to announce the completion of the second book by the Warrior Writers Project entitled Re-Making Sense. The book is a collection of creative writing and art by members of Iraq Veterans Against the War. The 200 page book features over 40 members of IVAW. It contains poetry, prose, letters, photographs and visual artwork. The Warrior Writers Project provides tools and space for community building, healing and redefinition to Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW). Through writing/artistic workshops that are based on experiences in the military and Iraq, the veterans unbury their experiences and connect with each other on a personal and artistic level. The writing from the workshops is compiled into books, performances and exhibits that provide a lens into the hearts of people who have a deep and intimate relationship with the Iraq war. Furthermore, it gives the veterans a sense of ownership over their stories and strength in their voice, perspective and power. For more info about the Warrior Writers Project email warriorwriters@ivaw.org. Available at the Peace & Justice Store.

Our peace & human rights work

We understand that the world will never know peace as long as some people are oppressed and/or denied access to adequate economic resources and opportunities. We will never have economic justice as long as some people maintain their positions of superiority through armed conflict. We will never achieve environmental sustainability as long as economic and political forces promote growth and consumption at all costs. It is the intersection of these issues-peace, justice and the environment-that is the focus of the work of the Peace & Justice Center.

We work to:
Provide informative educational materials, programs and events on peace and human rights issues.

Develop policies and do advocacy on peace and human rights issues in Vermont where possible (eg. research on alternatives).

Connect people involved on different issues with each other (eg. share experiences, leadership development, cross-cultural exchanges, etc.).

Provide logistical support for others' activism (groups working on other issues).

NEW! Educate Vermonters on conscientious objection and military myths via counter military recruitment work. Click here to learn more about our conscientious objection work and click here for more information on our counter military recruitment work!

He is the first Iraq war veteran to file for discharge from the army as a conscientious objector. He was released in February 2005, and has been speaking out with help of organizations like Global Exchange, Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW), and Military Families Speak Out (MFSO).
