  Internships & Volunteer Opportunities

The Peace & Justice Center works on the intersecting issues of peace and human rights and economic and racial justice in Vermont. Created in 1979, the PJC is a statewide, membership organization which strives to educate Vermonters on peace issues, conscientious objection, counter military recruitment issues, livable wages, economic justice, and anti-racism activism.

2008 SUMMER INTERNSHIPS AVAILABLE

WORK FOR SOCIAL CHANGE AT THE PEACE & JUSTICE CENTER!

DEADLINE MAY 1, 2008!

The PJC is seeking reliable, smart, politically aware, progressive interns to assist the PJC staff in the day to day functioning of the Center. The positions include administrative, organizing, and research work.

All positions are unpaid, but PJC internships offer a very hands-on opportunity to work in for social justice organization. PJC interns often have full access to all levels of program work. This is a great opportunity to build strong writing and verbal skills, learn about advocacy from an activist perspective, learn how to plan events and actions, and learn the inter-workings of a non-profit.  The start date and hours a week for all the internships will be determined by the project directors and you.  10 hours is the  minimum amount a week for any of the internships.

Peace & Justice Store Fair Trade Campaign Assistant

Help build the PJC's non-profit, Fair Trade Store!!  Do research for and help organize events for the Peace & Justice Store's Fair Trade Campaign including Purchase with a Purpose, fair trade films and panel discussions.  Help research and organize a new initiative to make Burlington a Fair Trade Town.

Peace & Human Rights Assistant Organizer (2 positions)
Assist the peace & human rights organizer with organizing community activities including; counter military recruitment (CR) work in local schools and colleges, conscientious objection (CO) education, anti-war actions, and general international human rights issues.

Vermont Livable Wage Campaign Assistant Organizer (2 positions)
Assist the Vermont Livable Wage Campaign Director with organizing community activities including: general educational workshops on livable wage, the wealth divide and economic justice issues; public meetings/panels on workers' rights and livable wages; educational forums on the 2008 State Legislative Session re: paid sick leave, economic development issues and basic needs research; and rallies and meetings for local livable wage campaigns in the Burlington-area. Opportunities to develop projects based on the individual economic justice interest or passion of the intern(s).

Development Intern 2008

Learn the tricks of the non-profit fundraising trade! Conduct community outreach, prospect research and database maintenance, provide administrative support, and assist with mailings, soliciting and tracking in-kind donations. The ideal candidate will have experience with social networking, website design and maintenance or a willingness to learn and utilize social networking to become a wired fundraiser for the PJC.

 

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The PJC needs volunteers to help with mailings, phone-banking, tabling at events, staffing the store or helping with various committees (fundraising, livable wage steering committee, special events, etc).

PJC interns assisted us in organizing a public art action in association with the Shadow Project in August 2005 to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Hiroshima/Nagasaki atomic bombings.

 

Our summer 2006 economic justice intern and peace & human rights intern (above) take part as participants in our Popular Economics Institute after assisting us in organizing the event.
